Limit Breaks
Limit Breaks have undergone several changes when compared to the Limit Break system in Final Fantasy VII. The most important change is that Limit Breaks only become available to use when a character goes below a certain HP level (specifically, 32%). You will know when they have dropped low enough because that character’s name and HP will be highlighted yellow on the battle screen.
You can also use
Aura magic to allow the usage of Limit Breaks without requiring the character to have low HP.
Even if your character has low HP or has Aura Magic activated, you still may not see the option to perform a Limit Break come up on the screen. Thankfully, there is a nifty little trick you can use to force a Limit Break. Just keep switching between characters (using the button) until the Limit Break option comes up.
Use the links below for more information on each character’s Limit Break.
Squall
Squall performs a rapid series of slashes followed by a powerful finishing move. Trigger pulls between hits increase damage.
Rinoa
Rinoa teams up with her dog Angelo for various support and attack abilities. Angelo’s moves are learned through Pet Pals magazines.
Quistis
Quistis uses enemy abilities learned from specific items. Her Blue Magic provides powerful offensive and support options.
Zell
Zell performs a timed combo of martial arts moves. Mastering the button inputs can make this the most damaging Limit Break in the game.
Selphie
Selphie spins a slot machine to randomly select a spell to cast. Rare options like The End can instantly defeat almost any enemy.
Irvine
Irvine unloads various ammunition types during a timed shooting sequence. Different ammo types deal different elemental damage.
