Fury

Lulu’s Overdrive is called “Fury.” It allows her to cast a selected Black Magic spell multiple times in rapid succession without costing her any MP.

Input Mechanic

After selecting Fury, you can choose any of Lulu’s Black Magic spells that she has learned up to that point. An approximately 4-second timer will begin, during which you must rotate the right analog stick clockwise as quickly as possible. The faster you rotate, the more times Lulu will cast the spell. Each individual cast deals reduced damage, though, compared to a normal cast of that spell.

Fury’s Functionality

Fury will work even if Lulu has been Silenced because it is an Overdrive rather than a standard “Magic” ability. The timer will always count down to zero, so unlike Tidus and Auron, there is no time-remaining damage bonus. Fury is available to Lulu from the beginning of the game, and there are no alternative versions to unlock as you progress through the story.

Lulu’s Weaknesses

Lulu’s Overdrive isn’t very impressive when you get it, and unfortunately, it gets even worse the further you progress into the game. This is for two reasons:

  1. For some reason, each Black Magic spell cast will deal a reduced amount of damage from a normal cast.
  2. Elemental magic damage tends to be less and less effective the further you get into the game. Endgame bosses have fewer and fewer elemental weaknesses, if they have any at all. Spells like Black Magic IconFlare or Black Magic IconUltima can help improve Fury’s usefulness, but even those spells, with the reduced damage effect, are lackluster at best.

Because of these weaknesses, Lulu is considered one of the weaker characters to use in your party. Check out the “Best Party” page using the link below for more information:
