Ronso Rage

Kimahri’s Overdrive is “Ronso Rage.” This is Final Fantasy X’s version of the Enemy Skill Materia, Quistis’ Blue Magic, or Quina’s Blu Mag. He can learn new Ronso Rage attacks by using the Special Ability IconLancet ability on specific enemies throughout the game. While other characters can learn Lancet through the Sphere Grid, only Kimahri can learn Ronso Rage abilities from it. There is no input mini-game; you just select the Overdrive ability you want to use.

Functionality and Usage

Whenever Kimahri learns a new Ronso Rage ability through Special Ability IconLancet, his Overdrive gauge is immediately filled to maximum, granting him a free Overdrive right away. There are 12 Ronso Rage abilities in total to learn (Kimahri will already know “Jump” at the start of the game). Collecting all 12 in the new versions will earn you an achievement/trophy.

Almost all Ronso Rage abilities can be learned from Biran and Yenke Ronso during the mandatory solo battle at the top of Mt. Gagazet. Kimahri can learn…

From Biran:

  • Self-Destruct
  • Thrust Kick
  • Doom
  • Mighty Guard*

From Yenke:

  • Fire Breath
  • Stone Breath
  • Aqua Breath
  • White Wind*

Abilities marked with an asterisk (*) need to be used by either Biran or Yenke first in the battle before Kimahri will be able to learn them. Check out the Mt. Gagazet walkthrough page for more tips and tricks to prepare you for this fight.

Kimahri’s Utility

The usefulness of Kimahri’s Ronso Rage abilities is debatable. While he does have several strong abilities, including Mighty Guard and Nova, by the time you’re able to learn them, you’ll have access to other moves capable of replicating their effects. The “NulAll” effect can be very helpful, though, considering there’s no other way to cast all of the “Nul” effects (i.e., White Magic IconNulBlaze, White Magic IconNulFrost) at the same time.
