Missable Items and Events

Final Fantasy VII has a significant amount of content that can be permanently missed if you are not careful. Unlike some other games in the series, there are items, Materia, Limit Breaks, and even entire side quests that become permanently unavailable once you pass certain story points or leave certain areas.

This page provides a comprehensive breakdown of everything that can be missed, organized by category, so you can plan ahead and avoid losing anything important. If you are following the walkthrough, all of these items and events are flagged at the appropriate points.

Time-Sensitive Level 4 Limit Break

One of the party member’s Level 4 Limit Break must be obtained before reaching the Temple of the Ancients near the end of Disc 1. If you miss this window, the Limit Break and its associated achievement/trophy (Silver Trophy IconSee the Light) are permanently locked for that playthrough.

This walkthrough flags exactly when to complete each step so you will not miss it if you are following along. Check out the Temple of the Ancients walkthrough page and the Level 4 Limit Breaks side quest page for more information.

Secret Characters

Both secret characters are optional and can be recruited at various points during the game, but missing them means losing access to their Limit Breaks, side quests, and story content.

Enemy Skill Materia

Several Enemy Skills for your Command Materia IconEnemy Skill Materia can only be learned from enemies in areas that become permanently inaccessible or from one-time encounters:

Enemy Skill Source
Pandora’s Box Can only be learned from the very first Dragon Zombie encountered in the Northern Cave. Due to a programming quirk, no Dragon Zombie after the first will ever use this ability. This is the single most missable item in the game.
Trine Available from the Materia Keeper boss on Mount Nibel, from Godo during the Wutai Pagoda side quest, or from Stilva enemies on Gaea’s Cliff.
Death Sentence Available from Boundfat enemies in Corel Valley or from Gi Spector/Sneaky Step enemies in the Cave of the Gi. The Cave of the Gi cannot be revisited after leaving Cosmo Canyon.

One-Time Areas and Items

Several areas in the game can only be visited once. Any items, Materia, or treasure you miss in these areas is gone forever:

Midgar (Disc 1)

Many areas of Midgar can only be explored during their respective story sections on Disc 1. The Sector 7 Slums become permanently inaccessible after the plate falls, and the Shinra Building can only be explored during the Disc 1 raid.

Later in the game, you can use the Key to Sector 5 side quest to return to the Sector 5 Slums and Wall Market after Cloud rejoins the party on Disc 2. This gives you a second chance to pick up the Turtle’s Paradise flyer in Sector 5 and to obtain Tifa’s Ultimate Weapon, Premium Heart, in Wall Market. However, most of the original Midgar areas remain off-limits.

Temple of the Ancients

The Temple of the Ancients collapses after you complete it. Any treasure chests or items you miss inside are permanently lost, including:

  • Accessory IconRibbon: One of the most powerful accessories in the game, protecting against almost all status ailments.
  • Summon Materia IconBahamut Materia: Dropped after defeating the Red Dragon boss.
  • Command Materia IconMorph Materia: The only Morph Materia available in the game.

Cave of the Gi

The Cave of the Gi in Cosmo Canyon is a mandatory dungeon that cannot be re-entered after you leave. Make sure you pick up all items inside before moving on:

Chocobo Jockey’s Lounge

The Chocobo Jockey’s Lounge at Gold Saucer is only accessible just before the first Chocobo Race and the escape from Corel Prison. The Summon Materia IconRamuh Materia is sitting on the floor and can be permanently missed if you do not pick it up before the race.

Whirlwind Maze

The Whirlwind Maze on the way to the Northern Crater is a one-time area. The Support Materia IconMP Turbo Materia can be found here and cannot be obtained if missed.

Corel Prison

Corel Prison cannot be revisited after you escape. However, it contains no unique items or Materia, only a basic item shop with Potions, Phoenix Downs, and Tents.

Tifa’s Piano

Playing Tifa’s Piano in Nibelheim is a two-step process that begins during the Kalm flashback on Disc 1. If you do not choose to “jam on” the piano during the flashback sequence, you will not be able to obtain the Support Materia IconElemental Materia from the piano later in the game. This walkthrough flags this at the appropriate time during the Kalm section.

Turtle’s Paradise Flyers

The Turtle’s Paradise side quest requires finding six newsletter flyers posted in various locations around the world. One of these is particularly easy to miss:

  • Flyer #2: Located on the second floor of the Shinra Building. This can only be obtained during the Disc 1 raid on the Shinra Building, or during the brief return visit when parachuting into Midgar later. If missed both times, the Turtle’s Paradise side quest cannot be completed. This walkthrough flags the flyer at the appropriate point during the Shinra Building section.

The other five flyers are located in areas that remain accessible throughout the game.

Level 4 Limit Breaks

Each character’s Level 4 Limit Break requires a special manual item. While most of these remain obtainable throughout the game, a few have specific requirements:

Character Limit Break How to Obtain
Portrait of Aeris Great Gospel Must be obtained before the Temple of the Ancients (see the time-sensitive section above).
Portrait of Barret Catastrophe Obtained from the North Corel Inn, but only after successfully completing the Huge Materia train chase side quest.
Portrait of Yuffie All Creation Requires completing the Wutai Pagoda side quest, which requires recruiting Yuffie first.
Portrait of Vincent Chaos Requires recruiting Vincent and visiting Lucrecia’s Crystal Cave with the submarine.
Portrait of Tifa Final Heaven Obtained by playing the piano in Tifa’s house in Nibelheim after Cloud rejoins the party on Disc 2. Requires having “jammed” on the piano during the Kalm flashback.
Portrait of Red XIII Cosmo Memory Found in the Shinra Mansion safe (same safe as Vincent’s recruitment).
Portrait of Cloud Omnislash Purchased from the Battle Square at the Gold Saucer for 32,000+ Battle Points.
Portrait of Cid Highwind Found in the Sunken Gelnika (requires the submarine).

For more information, check out the Level 4 Limit Breaks section of the guide:

Fort Condor Battles

The Fort Condor mini-game has 20 possible battles, each tied to a specific window in the story. If you advance the story past a battle’s window without completing it, that battle and its unique prize are lost. The prizes include weapons, accessories, and consumables. Check out the Fort Condor side quest page for the full list of battles and their time windows.

Side Quests

Most side quests remain available through the end of the game, but a few have time windows or prerequisites:

  • Wutai Materia Theft:
If Yuffie is in your party and you visit Wutai at certain points, she will steal all of your Materia, triggering the Wutai quest line. This must be completed to progress with your Materia intact.
  • Wutai Pagoda:
    Requires Yuffie in the party.
  • Gold Saucer Date:
Influenced by dialog choices and party selections throughout the game, particularly during Disc 1. Specific choices are required for the Bronze Trophy IconBest Bromance achievement/trophy.

Achievements and Trophies

For players aiming for 100% achievement completion, several trophies have specific missable requirements:
