Fiend Colony (Mi’ihen Highroad)

The Fiend Colony is similar to the Ruin Depths in that it requires you to complete steps of the Chocobo Ranch side quest to open it up. You will need to send a Level 4 or 5 Chocobo to the Mi’ihen Highroad to unlock this brand new location. For more information on how to complete these steps, check out the Chocobo Ranch side quest page:

After you’ve sent a Chocobo, you’ll get a message indicating that a new dungeon has been found in the Mi’ihen Highroad.

Head to the area where the hover crashed (near the Save Sphere IconSave Sphere). You can ride there on a Chocobo to get there more quickly. Select “Yup-yup!” when the option to enter the portal appears.

Why Visit the Fiend Colony?

By the time you can reach the Fiend Colony, there isn’t really much that you need from inside the caves. There are a few interesting rewards, like the Arcane Tome, White Tome, and Sword Tome, but none of them are critical.

The most important thing to do in this area is to initiate a battle against King VERMIN!, the final boss at the end of the last corridor. This is the only place you can find this fiend, and you’ll need it to complete Shinra’s Bestiary.

It’s possible to enter the Fiend Colony and maintain an Oversoul. King VERMIN! itself shares a fiend type/family with the Creepers, Hexapods, and Hug Bugs in this area. But even if you don’t fight it in its Oversouled form right here, you’ll be able to fight King VERMIN! again in the Via Infinito.

The premise of navigating through the Fiend Colony caves is that you have to spend an unknown quantity of S-Bomb, M-Bomb, and L-Bomb to break through the walls where a message appears saying you can ‘blast through.’

There are two challenges associated with this dungeon: navigating through the confusing corridors and not using up too many bombs before you get to your destination. This is very easy to do, though, if you have a map. And use the table as a guide to help you:

Fiend Colony

Bomb Value
S-Bomb1
M-Bomb2
L-Bomb3
Wall Strength
 Red25
 Yellow10
 Green5

Before you initiate the final boss battle, make sure you equip your party members with items or Dresspheres that protect against Sleep and Fire damage. This includes Twist Headbands, Ribbons, the Restless Sleep Garment Grid, Crimson Rings, Sublimators, and so on, as they will make the battle much easier.

Reaching King VERMIN!

Once you reach the end of the cave, you’ll trigger a battle against…

King VERMIN!
Boss Battle

The battle against King VERMIN! starts with an ambush, giving it the first attack and putting you on the back foot from the start. It will use the following attacks:

Normal Form:

  • “Swipe,” a physical attack that inflicts Sleep
  • Fira and Firaga

Oversoul Form (also gains these):

  • Holy, Flare, and Demi, which are all incredibly strong magic attacks
  • A triple physical attack that deals damage three times

You can cast Reflect on your party members to make this fight much easier, because this boss relies on heavy magic damage to deal damage to your party. Get Reflect active and then use a White Mage to cast Pray, or have an Alchemist use their Mega-Potion ability to heal through the Reflect.
