New Cave (Thunder Plains)
The first time you gain access to the “New Cave” in the Thunder Plains is in the last chapter of the game, Chapter 5, when you have to go into the cave to save Cid. The first thing you have to do is complete “Mission: A Fallen Genius?” and defeat all of the enemies guarding each of the towers. Then venture into the New Cave to rescue Cid. You can find the details on the Thunder Plains page of the walkthrough:
Walkthrough
Clear the towers in “Mission: A Fallen Genius?”, then head into the New Cave to rescue Cid.
After you’ve rescued Cid, you can go back down to the Thunder Plains and talk to the Al Bhed Tower Technician in the northern section of the Thunder Plains. He will let you back into the New Cave, where it’s time to complete a wall/number mini-game.
Helpful Hint
The New Cave puzzle is significantly easier if you wear a
Charm Bangle to prevent random encounters while you navigate through the New Cave. At points, the game will ask you to ‘add the number of battles you’ve been in while in the cave’ to one of your codes, so rather than having to manually track how many battles you’ve been in, it’s much easier if the answer is always “zero.”
How the Puzzle Works
The game will give you a number at the start for the first wall to unlock: wall 3. The number will appear like this:

When you examine Wall 3, which is marked with a red arrow () on your map, you’ll see two more numbers:

The “Code Entry” for Wall 3 is made up of the two key numbers with “3” on them:

All you have to do is add the two numbers together to get the code. But here is the critical part: write down the other key number! In this example, the next key number needed is for Wall 10, which will now be marked with a red arrow. For the next wall, which is Wall 10, one code will appear in the top-left corner, and the other code is the one you wrote down. In this example, we wrote down the key number above, and we add it to the one showing on the screen.
Also, once you’ve calculated the code for a Wall, write that code down too!
This process repeats, but the numbers get much more complicated as you progress through the dungeon. Instead of the code just being a random number, it may also be:
- The code you used on another wall (plus a number)
- The number of battles you’ve been in while in the cave (see “Helpful Hint” note above)
- The amount of Gil gained since entering the cave (only increases if you’ve been in battles)
Treasure Chests Behind Walls
After you’ve opened a Wall, two treasure chests will spawn behind it. One of the treasure chests contains a random useful item, while the other is empty. This is a completely random game of chance, so just pick one of them at random.
Map of Walls and Treasure
You can use the red arrow markers () on the screen to help you find each of the walls, but the map below is included for reference. Note that the order you visit each Wall is as follows:
3 → 10 → 11 → 5 → 1 → 8 → 12 → 13 → 9 → 6 → 7 → 14 → 2 → 15 → 16 → 4
New Cave
The map also marks 4 points of interest. Point A will tell you how many battles you’ve been in, Point B will tell you a code, and Point C will tell you how much Gil you have earned. You shouldn’t need any of these if you’re not engaging in any battles while in the New Cave through the use of a
Charm Bangle.
