Story Level 1

I was born and raised on Kilika Island, and music has always been my passion, but not the old Yevon stuff.
I need a sound that no one has ever heard. Music with a strong beat that moves the very soul.
My dream was to perform on the grand stage of Luca Stadium in front of a sellout crowd.

Story Level 2

This isn’t exactly unique, but a while back I had an argument with my parents about my future.
When I said I wanted to play music in Luca, they looked at me with sad eyes and told me to get out.
Yet I had no regrets. I was glad that I had the opportunity to pursue my dream of creating new music.
I chose to leave home, singing a little ditty and bringing along nothing but my guitar.

Story Level 3

I was only sixteen at the time. I stood at the mast of the ship, filled with both hope and fear.
It was the first time I had left the island... I was supposed to start a life on my own.
That night, the ship met with a fierce storm caused by Sin. It sank in the blink of an eye.
When I awoke, I was in the Kilika Woods...and transformed into what you see before you.

Story Level 4

I could no longer hear music. All I heard was the buzzing of insect wings.
When I realized the sound was coming from me, I lost it and started attacking people.
I even attacked people I knew since my youth. I could no longer hear their sound either.
The buzzing nearly took away my sanity.
But since you have captured me, I am surrounded by silence, and I can hear my heart again.
Even fiends have a reason for living. I want to go back to Kilika Island and start anew.

Personal log: Not a cloud in the sky today. It’s been a week since we set sail from Kilika.
Plan to buy a coral necklace for my wife in Besaid. She will love it. What should I get for my son?

Personal log: The winds were a bit stronger today.
With our holds filled with Besaid cargo, we set sail back to Kilika.
Even after years of sailing, I still feel slightly anxious when leaving dry land.
But that feeling is quickly replaced by excitement for the next journey, or to see my family again.

Personal log: Such heavy rain! In all my years, I have not seen a storm this bad.
How long since we lost control of the ship? I do not even know what direction we are going in.
They say that Sin appears during storms like this. We must get through it quickly...

Personal log: The fierce storm has taken out the lamp in my cabin.
I write this final log entry under the light of the single candle I have left.
The ship is listing, and water is coming in from everywhere. It is only a matter of time before we sink.
We have decided to put our fate in the hands of this ship, the Adamantoise. We need a miracle.

In this age, areas like Besaid and Kilika were all on one continent.
No other life can be seen. Only this fiend is walking through this vast, horizonless land.

Shinra Analysis: The creature fell into its deep sleep in what we know as Spira’s ice age.
Djose was encased in ice, with no other signs of life on Spira. Could this fiend possibly be...?

It seems to have acquired linguistic capabilities.
It says it’s an envoy from the fiend world, but it’s just a kid!
So this fiend is from the “fiend world”? It’s a place located between Spira and the Farplane.

Shinra Analysis: It’s building up power. Could it be preparing to evolve again?
I checked the ancient texts and found a legend that tells of a “fiend world” between Spira and the Farplane.
This fiend is a rare species called an “envoy” from the fiend world.

Oh, that’s right! I went looking for water, but I was attacked by fiends. Now I’m a fiend...
I have to get back to my parents and sisters!
I’m the son of a Bikanel merchant. Our family runs a caravan that goes around to camps.
But we got lost in the desert...

Story Level 2

That day, we loaded the shoopufs and headed out across the desert as usual.
At high noon, it suddenly got dark, and a big sandstorm approached.
We frantically tried to escape, but the storm came at us so fast, and swallowed us up in an instant.
My father held me and the bigger of my younger sisters, and dove into the sand.
After that, I just remember it being completely dark, and I could only hear the rumbling of the storm.

Story Level 3

After the storm passed through, we stuck our heads out of the sand, and saw that we were completely lost.
The compass was ruined by sand, and the storm removed all the markers in the desert.
And worst of all, the storm somehow took our precious water supply.
You know how horrifying it is to have no water in the desert, right?
So we started looking for an oasis, but there were none to be found.

Story Level 4

My small sister was the first to become unable to move, then my other sister, then my mother.
The sun continued to glare down upon us without mercy.
I needed to find water while I was still able to move. I decided to go search alone.
On wobbly feet, I left the caravan and my family, but I was soon attacked by fiends.
Even as we speak, my family may be... Please, please find them and help them!

It was Sin. I was about to be swallowed by the wave, when “he” saved me.

Shinra, guess what? I remember now! You know, the promise I made with him back then.
We promised that if we survived, we would meet again... at the bridge in Kilika.
But in the end, I didn’t make it through the attack. That’s why I look like this now...
But I still can’t forget about him... I know that it can’t work anymore, but I still love him!
If I go back to that place, will he still be waiting for me?

There isn’t a soul in Spira that doesn’t know my name. I was a big celebrity!
I was a two-time champion of the Luca Eating Contest! I was training hard for a third title, too!

The contest rules are simple. Whoever eats the most of the food that comes out, wins!
The dish in my first finals was the crispy- outside, juicy-inside Luca sandwich! I ate 200 of them with ease!
The second finals dish was oily fried flan. That was rough even for me, but I still ate a record 60!
If I won the next one, it would be a legendary three-peat! So I trained hard, pushing my gut to the limit!

But on the day of the contest, right before it began, it happened. I suddenly fell unconscious.
It was a stomach ailment. By the time they found it, it was too late, and I became...this.
It’s not fair! If I hadn’t collapsed that day, I would have had my three-peat!

Shinra, I want to enter the contest and stuff my face with Luca sandwiches again!
I still feel like I can’t lose! It’s almost contest season in Luca!

Um, I’m sorry to disturb you, but would you happen to know where Sin is?
I see, we’re in the Calm currently. I don’t know whose Calm it may be, but it is most welcome.
What’s that you say? Sin is no more!? Sin will never return again...?
Finally...finally! The day that Lady Belgemine predicted has arrived! Where is the lady...?
I see, so she has departed... The lady rescued me from Sin 200 years ago, when I was a “seed.”

Story Level 2

200 years ago, Spira was on the verge of being destroyed by Sin.
Every creature in Spira was about to be obliterated by Sin.
Having sensed this Lady Belgemine had a ship built in secret, and sailed us, the “chosen,” out to sea.
Under the protection of Lady Belgemine, the ship was not targeted for attack by Sin, and after a long journey...
the ship reached the far end of the world. That was 150 years ago...

Story Level 3

Of course, it was not an easy journey. Giant waves, disease...
Many of my comrades fell after leaving the continent.
We thought about turning back many, many times, but in the end, we persevered.
After all, the mission given to us by Lady Belgemine was to “live to keep the seed alive.”
We could not go back to Spira, for that meant going back to Sin.

Story Level 4

More time passed, and one day... the waves brought us something unexpected.
It was a moonlily. That single flower awakened the deep feelings we had for our dying world.
What did Spira look like now? Was Lady Belgemine safe...? We needed some way to get information.
After debating it at length, it was decided that I, who had wings, would go check on Spira.
And so it is that Sin is no more! I must go inform my comrades of the Eternal Calm now!

I served for many moons as a maester at Besaid Temple. Yes, you must doubt so because of my current form.
I can still hear the roaring seas of Besaid beating deep within my chest.
Never once have I forgotten that great debt I owe to the fayth.

Even in this form, I secretly visit the temple to pray each night as the people peacefully slumber.
Old habits die hard, but the gratitude I feel toward the fayth has never once diminished.

Since my death--or rather, since the fayth vanished--Yevon has suddenly fallen out of favor in Besaid.
What a sad state of affairs. But thanks to that, I have found a purpose. I shall visit during broad daylight.
You never know. My presence may inspire the people to believe once more!

Memories of a young girl who caught my eye when I served at the temple.

But one day, I suddenly remembered those terrible days of battle...the days when I was married!

I was once a sailor. I was wooed by my husband and moved from Besaid to Kilika.
My husband was a good man, but he could never stand up to his mother.
My mother-in-law considered me a rube, and she and my sister- in-law chided me in my husband’s absence.
Of course, I didn’t just sit there and take it, though!

But those days of arguing would come to an end...when Sin attacked Kilika.
Even then, my mother-in-law and I were arguing, and we did so to the bitter end...
But looking back, I’m glad I have those memories. It makes me grateful for what I have right now!

There are four such volumes that hold secrets of Bushido that have been passed down our order for generations.
But to our great shame, they have all been stolen from us.
Only the leader of the order, the Chieftain, is privy to the secrets in the manuals.
I have been charged by the Chieftain to capture the thieves and retrieve all of the manuals.

I’ve recovered the first volume! I wrested it from the leader of the Flan Brigands, “Hellfire” Flan Rojo!
He was a fierce opponent who had mastery over fire. Three volumes remain.

Story Level 3

The second volume has been retrieved! “Guillotine” Gemini, the leader of the Iron Giants, had it.
His skill with his giant sword made him a formidable opponent. Two volumes remain.

Story Level 4

The third volume has been retrieved! This one was being held by “Kamikaze” Cactuar of the Cactuar Assassins.
He ran like the wind, with slicing attacks like a butterfly’s wings. Only one volume remains!

I, um, actually... always kinda admired the Gullwings from afar...
I heard about the trap pods from a friend, so I was in Mt. Gagazet hoping to get caught.
And now I get to fight alongside you. I’m so happy!

That perfectly trained body! The mohawk that stops a running chocobo in its tracks!

I first saw Brother in the Gagazet ruins, as he jumped from the airship to go after Yuna.
He seemed so worried about her. He was shouting her name...
Of course Yuna and her team were too busy fighting Leblanc and company to notice, but...
I was so touched by Brother’s love, a love that seemed to know no obstacles. It opened my eyes.

Ever since I came aboard, I’ve been practicing body language, so I can be like Brother.
I think I’ve come a long way. I’m sure Brother and I can share a deeper understanding now.
My dream is to become Brother’s best student.
So today, I have to go tell him how I feel!

Isn’t it all about ego, in the end? We might be fiends, but we’re still living creatures!
Having to fight and kill each other is just so depressing!

So I have to shoot, you know? Although the whole time I’m thinking, “Duck!” or “Run!” or “Don’t get hit!”
Just between you and me, all right? My bullets are all blanks. Even if they hit you, they won’t kill you.
But that’s about the best I can do. Don’t expect much more.

Did you know some fiends are on the brink of extinction? Like coeurls, for example.
But that’s because people keep killing them for their fur! You know they fetch a high price, right?
So anyway, I just can’t sit here and do nothing.

I think that everyone has a purpose in life.
I used to think that I did all I could, but really, I was always just depending on others.
I’ve decided to dedicate myself to protecting fiends! That’s one thing that only I can do.

I have just a small dream: to sell balloons. Don’t laugh. I’ve never had much in the way of friends.
So I figure, maybe if I sell balloons, I can make some friends.
So I’m going to train to become the best balloon seller I can be!

Some Bombs from Kilika brought me a bunch of balloons today. Red, orange, blue...large and small.
One of the older Bombs has been selling balloons for 20 years. He was kind enough to give me some advice.
He told me each balloon stays afloat for a different number of days.

Story Level 3

The machina in the desert helped me dig up a pump to put gas into the balloons.
They just shrugged off the heat like it was nothing. You can always count on them!
They didn’t seem to be scared of me, but I don’t think they shared my enthusiasm, either.
Be that as it may, it’s thanks to them I got this pump and am one step closer to my dream.

The Hypello taught me how to properly insert gas into the balloons. It’s harder than it looks!
Speedily, like dispatching a foe. Sweetly, like wooing a girl. Something like that.
Before I left, they showed me the Hypello dance. A little creepy, but I suppose it had its charm.
I must admit, Spira is full of all types!
I’ve come a long way, but there’s still something that’s worrying me.
Yeah...looking like I do, I think I might scare customers away!

I gladly made the deal. I mean, I can just take out anyone I don’t like, right?

So I went wild! But one day I messed up and died, and my partners sealed my powers.
But they forgot to send me to the Farplane! The nerve of them!
So anyway, I can’t use Doom right at this moment, but I’ll get it back, I swear!

I can feel it! The seal will be broken soon! I’ll have my powers back!
I’ll make my old associates pay for envying me and taking away my power!

He’s a very generous teacher, and when he’s listening, I can feel myself getting better and better!

I am the daughter of a maester in the Bevelle Temple.
I studied the great traditions and rituals of Yevon since the time of my youth so that I may follow in his path.
Though I was destined for greatness, I was met with disaster. I was assassinated by an anti-Yevon group.

Story Level 2

Do you know how maesters live? They have to live a virtuous life to serve as an example for people who worship Yevon.
They sing hymns at daybreak and spend most of the day inside the temple, studying the teachings.
Bevelle Temple takes a half day to fully clean.
At dusk, prayers are offered to Zanarkand, and thoughts are given to the fate of Lady Yunalesca.
I was but a child, and there was much I did not understand. But I studied hard and lived a humble life.

Story Level 3

I had a good friend, about my age and height. The two of us were inseparable.
We always sat next to each other at temple school. She, too, was the daughter of a maester.
We kept each other going in our quest to become future maesters of Yevon.
Oh yes, we would sometimes even grow enamored with the same person! I wonder what she is doing these days...
I look like this now, so even if I want to go see her, I can’t.
My hope is that she lives a long, fruitful life as a maester, for the both of us.

There’s one thing I just cannot understand. I have always obeyed the teachings of Yevon.
So why would I be turned into a fiend? I do remember being killed at the temple, but...
Why did I not undergo the sending? What became of my father? I must know the truth!

Do you remember the Crusaders? They protected people from Sin, and looked after their welfare.
I was a Crusader, too, but Sin got me during Operation Mi’ihen, and I fell into the ocean...
When I came to, I had become a fiend, but no matter.
If we hadn’t stopped Sin there, Luca would have been the next target.

It was also to be a memorial, to honor the souls of our fallen comrades.

When the construction plans were finalized, Crusaders that were scattered across Spira flocked to the site.
They had all lost so much, and they all carried painful memories within their hearts.
But they would not avert their eyes from the past. They would draw strength from it to start anew.
Construction began at a fevered pitch. It was Nooj’s ideal, and the building of this foundation...
that united the Crusaders as one again.

I first met him at a blitzball tournament two years ago.
I said hello to him as he was staring intensely at the ocean, right before a game.
Any topic I threw at him, he would respond in the same nervous voice, “I’ll do my best.”
The fifth time he said it, we both burst into laughter.
I guess I became his fan because I wanted to see that smile again.

After the tournament, the Aurochs were mobbed by fans. I looked around for him, but no luck.
I waited at the same spot on the docks, hoping to meet him as his ship left for Besaid.
It might have been fate, but he came just before I left. We got to talking again.
As the ship departed, he called out, “Keep rooting for us.” His voice almost sounded a little sad.
I wished I could hear his voice, just once more...

I visited Besaid several weeks later.
Showing me around the island, he seemed happy, embarrassed, and confused.
The sun reflected off the ocean differently than in Luca. He told me that he loved his little island.
That was our first date, I suppose.
Seeing him practice there on the sunny beach, I slowly grew more and more fond of him.

Accepting orders from a machine...times sure have changed! But work is work, as the saying goes.
Thing was on the verge of breaking down! But he kept begging and begging, so I decided to help him out.
I went to the desert to deliver the chip. You’ll never guess what happened!
The Al Bhed girl who received the package was worried about the thing like it was her own child! Go figure!

I’m not up to today’s delivery. A coeurl from Djose needs me to deliver a gift to his grandson.
Problem is, the grandson is still human! I blew him off at first, but he started bawling like a little girl.
The old coeurl could barely move, so I just gave in and said yes. Flew the skies just like a pyrefly, I did.
When I delivered--or rather dumped--the gift off, the kid started crying his eyes out.
You suppose being a crybaby is genetic? Believe me, this is the first and last time I deal with humans!

Some contracts I took when I was human, I still can’t forget, like 3 years ago in Bevelle.
It was a high monk who held a lot of power within Yevon.
I targeted him after a speech, though he was surrounded by guards. It was quite a risky gamble.
So what happened? Well, of course I fulfilled the contract, but I didn’t escape unscathed.
Look, even in my fiend form, I still have the scar I received on that day.

So why did I choose to become a fiend?
It had to do with a juicy contract I got. The target is an individual of near immeasurable power.
At the time, I felt I had reached the limits of my skills, but failure is not an option in the guild.
The only way I could improve my skills was to get a new body, the one you see before you right now.
My body is now a gun; one which never runs out of bullets.
Quick draw, automatic fire, I can do anything now. I’ve become the ultimate sniper.
And now, I have to go take care of that fat, juicy contract...

Even the great Yevon has a dark side to his story. My mission is to make sure that part of his legacy is not forgotten.

I...can’t remember how I became a fiend. Well, I have an idea of how it may have happened.
I come from the Calm Lands. I lived there with my folks. They really coddled me.
I found it kind of suffocating, though. They said it wasn’t safe to play outside at noon, even.
So I didn’t have any friends. The only playmates I had were my mom and my dad.
But they both worked, so I was alone most of the time.

My folks ran the Rin Travel Agency. One day, a customer came in and told us about Bevelle.
He said it was the largest city in Spira. I couldn’t even imagine such a place.
I mean, I had never really even left the travel agency very much.
That night, at dinner, I asked my folks to take me to Bevelle.
But they just sort of got agitated and said no, saying it was “dangerous” repeatedly.
I thought to myself, “I’m not a child anymore.” It was time for me to leave the house.

I left the house, and made my way to Bevelle.
I lost my way in the woods that night, and by the time I made it through it was dawn.
It was then that a soldier in the area noticed me.
“F-F-Fiend...!” That’s what he said before he and his friends began chasing me.
I ran so hard that I eventually fainted. When I came to, I was by a brook, and I gazed into the water.
I was shocked to see that the image in the reflection was that of a hairy, hideous fiend!

Have you ever heard the tale of the blades of Mi’ihen, founder of the Crusaders?
His bravery was unparalleled, but he was also well known as a sword collector.
To tell you the truth, I myself was one of Mi’ihen’s blades.

Story Level 2

800 years ago, I was a fiend who lurked in Djose, assaulting unwitting travelers.
I was a fiend that wouldn’t die even after being killed. The people asked Crusaders for help.
Several days later, a lone swordsman came to challenge me. That was Mi’ihen himself.
After a long battle, I was defeated by him. Weary of my inability to die, I begged Mi’ihen to help me.
He replied, “Then you shall become a blade, fighting alongside me to restore peace to Spira.”
That day, I became an undying blade, serving the great warrior Mi’ihen.
I suffered not one nick cutting through swaths of armor, and bested many a fiend with one swing from Mi’ihen.
I aided Mi’ihen, my new master, and he taught me what it meant to have pride.

However, change was afoot with the master’s death. The swords he had accumulated were scattered across Spira.
Some were sealed away, others left to rot, and then there was me--an undying fiend made into a weapon.
Eventually, I returned to my fiend form, my mind turning back into that savage, bloodthirsty creature.

Only when I talk to you can I hold back my savage nature and reminisce about my days with the master.
However, that will not last long. Eventually, I will completely revert into a savage fiend wandering Spira.

I was an untrained whelp who didn’t know his right from his left. I was desperate to just get by.

The pain serves as a reminder for me to pursue the memories of this terrible injustice.

Fragments of my memory are slowly returning. At the scene, I witnessed a murder. A man was killed.
Moonlilies have been placed there now. Were they put there to honor the memory of the deceased?

By exiling them to Baaj, he was able to keep the peace.
That stormy night, we were sent off to sea, in secret, with only a handful of guards.
Master Jyscal was not there to see us off.
The Queen Mother gazing toward Guadosalam, with the young master clutched to her chest, is a sight I will never forget.

After escorting the two to Baaj Temple, we set sail back to Guadosalam.
However, just as we were about to arrive, we were attacked by Sin, and our ship was sunk.
I was swallowed up into the ocean, yet was not sent to the Farplane.
When I came to, I saw that I had been turned into a fiend instead.
I wandered through Spira, and finally found my way back to Guadosalam.

This is a long time ago now, but I used to be an engineer in Bevelle.
I was in my workshop all day and night with schematics, creating one innovation after another.
One of my proudest achievements is the gondola that you use to ride the shoopuf on the Moonflow.

Not knowing too much about it, I started on the path down from the Calm Lands.
But I told a guy I met on the road about the Core Sphere, and he killed me to take it from me.

A guy I met at the entrance to the Farplane told me the sphere I found was quite rare.
My body burned with rage, and I returned to Spira as a fiend.
I found my killer at a lodge on the Highroad, and took back my sphere. Furthermore...

I worried for him, but looking as I do, I would have only frightened him further if I approached.
Just as I turned my back to return from whence I came, the boy noticed me.

The boy was not afraid of me, but he did keep crying.
He said that he hadn’t finished his summer project for school, and classes were about to begin soon.
So I decided to tell him the story of the fiend who lived in the depths of the Moonflow.
The boy’s eyes then suddenly lit up, and from that day forward, he came to hear me tell my tale.
By the time the summer break was over, he had finished a project to bring back to school.

The lovers embrace, and Yunalesca vows to return safely.
I get it now! This machina was set to watch over Yunalesca and Zaon.
It continued to believe Yunalesca’s vow to return, and waited for her at the dome...
even 1000 years after she summoned the Final Aeon and perished.

This experience of living as a fiend has been terrible. I’ve never been good in groups.

I had heard the Arena was a place where fiends tested their mettle against each other.
That was why I allowed myself to be captured. It wasn’t so I could join some social group!
Please, just leave me alone. It’s my one, single wish.

This was the worst day of my fiend life. I lost badly in a practice match. Working in groups has thrown me off-balance.
My rhythm gets thrown off when I have to be with others morning, noon, and night.
Fighting opponents you know is also not easy. But the nightmare actually continues even after that.
After the defeat, I sat looking dejected, and one after another, the others came to console me and...talk.
This...camaraderie is proving detrimental to battle instincts.
I have but one request: get me a room with a lockable door.

As a lone warrior, I experienced some shame, but perhaps my time in the Arena did temper my steel somewhat.
The idea of leaving and never seeing my “comrades” again is rather comforting.

“Destroy Bevelle’s fiend soldiers.”
I knew the activation had something to do with those fiends that escaped the Arena.
It picked up the emergency signal from the Arena and started up.
It’s looking for escaped fiends, just like it was doing a thousand years ago.

I used to be a treasure hunter and adventurer traveling around Spira in search of riches!
My goal was to obtain hidden treasure never before seen in our time.
I set off when I heard a rumor that legendary ruins appeared when the clouds over Gagazet cleared up.
But alas, right as the treasure was within my grasp, something happened to me.
So, Yuna, I would ask a favor. Would you seek out the treasure in my place?
I’ll remember the way somehow. Come now, adventure awaits!

Story Level 2

Now now, the adventure has just begun!
Lighting a lamp in a cave in Gagazet revealed a shining prismatic stone reflected on water rising from the ground.
But there was no time for sightseeing. I had run low on rations and had to press forward.
I continued on, praying that I would reach the summit safe.

Story Level 3

We’ve reached the middle of the adventure! Somehow I had made it thus far.
Many fayth had supposedly resided in the towering cliffs. Now they just tower solemnly in the sky.
As I climbed ever higher, I discovered a hot spring! Resting my weary legs was an unexpected delight.
I was fully recharged and ready to go! So onwards and upwards!

The adventure is almost at its end! Making my way through the dense fog, I finally arrived at the ruins!
I continued on the path to the treasure... I could feel it close by. But something happened right here.
Something that ended my life and turned me into a fiend...
So, Yuna, I had thought to ask you to continue my quest, but I have realized that this is, in the end, my adventure.
Let me be the one to finish it. I can feel that treasure waiting for me!
