Developing a creature lets you teach your creatures new commands by having them consume items and accessories, but first, let’s talk about leveling up and equipping your creatures.
Leveling Creatures
Your creatures level up the same way your primary party members do. Defeat fiends, enemies, and bosses to earn experience points (EXP) and repeat. But in addition to gaining levels, your creatures will also (potentially) develop a “creature history” or a story.
Keep Your Party’s Level Down Warning
A trapped creature joins your team at a level based on the average of Yuna, Rikku, and Paine, and its Fiend Tale only advances when it gains a level. A creature that joins at level 99 can never gain one, so it can never finish its story, and the Aeon Cup, the Fiend World Cup chain, and the Lifetime Support achievement/trophy all depend on finished stories.
If your party is near the level cap, start a New Game Plus or a new game in general before working on Fiend Tales. Captured creatures carry over with their abilities, and their levels reset to 1.
These are cute little story levels you can earn, and you can read them in the Creature History as they unlock. Once a creature’s story is complete, releasing it plays its ending, and viewing one complete story earns the Lifetime Support achievement/trophy. Releasing it also gives you a Trap Pod, and a few releases unlock new cups, teams, and creatures. Check out the full list of unlockables using the link below:
Creature History
Leveling creatures up so you can view their story and release them to unlock Aeons in the Fiend Arena using Fayth fragments.
However, some fiends have ‘Fayth fragments’ instead of stories. Releasing one once its history is complete adds an Aeon battle to the ‘Battle Simulator,’ and together they unlock the Aeon Cup.
Equipping Creatures
Before you can use them in battle, you’ll have to choose a Garment Grid and a Dressphere for your creatures. You can also equip them with accessories, like a standard party member, and if you plan to use them in battle, you may as well equip them in a way that makes them more effective.
Some tips:
Once you have access to the Mascot Dressphere, you should equip your creatures with it 100% of the time. It provides the biggest boost to a creature’s stats.
Additionally, if you have creatures that you’re not using in battle, you can have them don other equipment for you, like Charm Bangles and Lure Bracers. Check out the Equipping Creatures page in the Tips and Tricks section for more information:

The game’s navigation is a bit confusing. From the Creature Creator, you can select “Develop Creature” from the menu, but it takes you straight to the game’s menu screen. You can actually develop your creatures from anywhere by opening up the menu and selecting “Creature.” Next, select the creature you want to develop.
The items and accessories you use to teach a creature a new command are consumed when you do this, so make sure you’re not getting rid of important items and accessories. Many of them can be picked up again by winning battles in the Fiend Arena, but others are irreplaceable, so you’re better off having your creature learn abilities by getting hit by them in battle.
Teaching an ability using an item usually takes several of that same item. For example, you’ll need to use 48 Potions to teach a creature Cure.
