100% Story Completion Overview

This overview page has been written to give you a much more thorough understanding of Final Fantasy X-2’s Story Completion element. Final Fantasy X-2 has a “Story Completion” percentage tracker that slowly climbs as you play through the game. Achieving 100% Story Completion is a requirement to see the full and complete ending when you beat the game, and is also tied to the Gold Trophy IconSweet Perfection Achievement/Trophy.

Story Completion Mechanics

There has been a lot of speculation and confusion over the years about how exactly the Story Completion Percent ticks up. What exactly triggers it? And what are the specific things you need to do while playing the game to get to 100%?

The game is structured so that certain lines of dialogue, when viewed, will increment your Story Completion Percent by 0.2. So, for example, the following scenes at the beginning of the game will award you percentage points:

Luca 2.0%
1 Rikku: “Hey! Give it back already!”Opening Cutscene +0.2% 0.2%
2 ????: “Sorry, no time for an encore!”Opening Cutscene +0.2% 0.4%
3 Rikku: “Hold still!”Luca Docks +0.2% 0.6%
4 Rikku: “Hey, you run too fast!”Luca Docks +0.2% 0.8%
5 ????: “You’re too slow, little girl.”Luca Docks +0.2% 1.0%
6 ????: “That’s quite enough sniveling, boys.”Luca Docks +0.2% 1.2%
7 Leblanc: “But it won’t be yours for long, loves!”Luca Docks +0.2% 1.4%
8 Leblanc: “I won’t let you off so easily next time!”Luca Docks +0.2% 1.6%
9 Rikku: “You sure look like you were enjoying yourself.”Celsius +0.2% 1.8%
10 Brother: “Ehcusehk dydy! Gullwings, du ouun sdydeuhs! (Incoming data! Gullwings, to your stations!”Celsius +0.2% 2.0%

By the time you’ve completed the opening scenes of the game and arrive aboard the Celsius, you’ll already be at approximately 2.0% Story Completion, and all from lines that happen as a mandatory portion of the story.

Where this gets complicated, though, is once you reach missable and skippable areas of the game. There are many unintuitive sections of the game where it’s very easy to leave behind Story Completion Percent if you’re not paying attention or if you make the wrong decision.

What Percent Are You At?

There are two methods for verifying your Story Completion Percent in the game, but there’s one very important thing to be aware of before you do…

You can check your Story Completion Percent in two ways: use the World Map or open the “Information” tab in one of your Save Game files. You can see a screenshot of the World Map below with an arrow pointing to the Story Completion Percent:

Alternatively, you can access the Save Sphere again after you’ve already saved your game, pull open the save file menu, and access the “Information” menu option. Both of these methods will round your Story Completion Percent down to the nearest whole number, but you can use this method to make sure you’re close to being on track by lining it up with the Story Completion Tracker.

Common Mistakes and Beginning Traps

Don’t Skip Cutscenes

Additional testing around skipping cutscenes, either by pressing the PlayStation Cross or X ButtonXbox A ButtonNintendo Switch B Button button to speed up dialogue or by pressing the PlayStation Start ButtonXbox Start ButtonNintendo Switch Plus Button Button and then pressing PlayStation Square ButtonXbox X ButtonNintendo Switch Y Button, has demonstrated that you quite often will still get the Story Completion Percent for those scenes, but this is one of the most finicky areas of the game. At the end of the day, it’s just not worth it. Don’t risk accidentally losing 0.2% on some random scene. Let every scene play all the way through.

Give the Awesome Sphere to Youth League

Different scenes will play out for the remainder of the game after you’ve given the Awesome Sphere to one of the factions. Both of these routes have different scenes that will give Story Completion Percent, but unfortunately, it’s mathematically impossible to get 100% Story Completion if you choose New Yevon. The maximum Story Completion is:

Youth League
100%
New Yevon
99.2%

You can see the different scenes that are available and how they play out on the Story Completion Tracker.

Decision Points and Missable Items

These are the things that you need to do to trigger Story Completion Percent either at the time or through scenes that are triggered later on, and they often go overlooked:

  • Interact with the Moogle in Luca during the opening sequence
  • Resting in the Celsius once per chapter
  • Comforting Brother on the Celsius after the Floating Ruins Mission
  • Speaking to Clasko twice at Mushroom Rock Road
  • Interrupting or otherwise not completing the discussion with Maechen, including at Mushroom Rock Road, Chateau Leblanc, or Zanarkand Ruins
  • Messing up the “Cuckoo for Chocobo” Mission along the Mi’ihen Highroad in Chapter 2
  • Not watching all of the CommSphere scenes in Wave 1, Wave 2, or Wave 3
  • Specifically, watching Beclem depart from Besaid is a prerequisite to an entire sequence of events on Besaid Island in the last chapter of the game
  • Completing the rehearsal with Rikku in the Thunder Plains Concert sequence
  • Talking to Shinra before talking to Leblanc in the engine room of the Celsius during the Thunder Plains Concert sequence
  • Triggering the extra scenes aboard the Celsius after saving Cid in the Thunder Plains in Chapter 5
  • Completing too many digs in the Bikanel Desert and not getting a chance to defeat Experiment at lower levels at the Djose Temple in Chapter 5
  • Completing the Publicity and Marriage Campaign before Chapter 5
  • Reaching the bottom of the Via Infinito
  • Getting an Episode Concluded instead of an Episode Complete in any location

Using the Story Completion Tracker

The Story Completion Tracker on this guide has been fully integrated with the walkthrough, allowing you to click a checkbox when you reach certain critical junctions within the game. The Tracker flags and highlights any important items you may have missed. Using it is very straightforward:

Step 1) Check off the Optional / Missable elements as you play through them. For example, in Guadosalam, there is a missable interaction that requires you to attempt to enter the Farplane:

Check the box once you have triggered the short cutscene where Yuna talks about “living with their memory of the dead.”

And lastly, when you’ve completed all of the scenes and tasks for the location (Guadosalam and Thunder Plains for this block), click the “Chapter Complete” button at the bottom. This action adds all the mandatory scenes and the Story Completion Percent associated with them, allowing you to see exactly whether your Percent aligns with where you’re expected to be at this point in the game:

You can use the individual trackers on each walkthrough page and the Story Completion Tracker to make sure you haven’t missed anything important. Use the link below to try it out:
